In South Jersey we had the Brigantine Haunted castle....It was year-round and very cool. But after going through it so many times, we got our kicks from torturing the other people (strangers) in our walking group. We would pinch the ankles of the people in the dark "rat cellar" and freak them out when all they expected were rubber hoses grazing their ankles....

Then the actors got wierd and out of control...touching when they shouldn't...then people started getting mugged inside...then it became a mess as every hall had a security guard shining a flashlight every time someone screamed...and no rooms were let to be dark for safety reasons.

...Then the whole castle sank into the ground so it had to be wrecked....True story.

The only thing that is truly scary is our lives and what we collect...LOL.

I'm with Jor. Most that I've seen advertised in the last five years or so try too hard to do something cutting edge. The last one I went to was in Pittsburgh that a friend had free tix to. It was an "alien encounter" instead of a haunted house ala Area 51. There were some really well done get-ups and props, but it was all flashy and smokey. They built it on the site of an abandoned drive-in, and had some interesting things on the screen, too. Sadly, although I was entertained, there wasn't anything even remotely adrenalizing about it. Everything was so predictable as you were lead through the sets. Some alien would pop up or a shuttle pod would burst into flames, and people would go "oooh, that's neat," but nobody looked like they were creeped out by it. Now, I imagine if they had done a set with the inside of a spaceship and had a tour group happen upon an anal probing or some other kind of invasive operation, and then the aliens look up at the people who had walked in, and suddenly the floor shakes accompanied by the sound of engines firing up, from which the victim is stirred to consciousness enough to scream to the group to get out before it takes off....<sigh> that may have been a bit frightening.

And what the hell are these religious people thinking?

Most haunted houses have become so drull that I don't even like going to them anymore myself, and I used to love it.. Now.. If they made, say, Sunny Valley (It's a very old, Asbestos filled, abandoned Psychiatric hospital that has overgrowth to no end) into a Haunted house and let people go through it, I'd be all for it. This place is spookey even in broad daylight. It's so bad that contractors won't touch the thing to tear it down (They try to play it off like it's the asbestos stopping them, but the state was going to be paying the bill for it to put a new road extension in) I've been next to the building a few times.. Damn thing runs a chill up my spine, and I'm not easily frightened anymore. (Runs in the family.. We're violent when startled. Ask my future brother in law.. He had the mistake of sneaking up on my sister Denise once, bwahahahaha)

The one I'd like to go see and 1see if they could actually make me frightened would be Universal's Halloween Horror Nights.

The trick to a good "haunted house" is to do something unpredictable. Make something happen that wasn't suppose to happen. For example...have an actor cut off another actor's arm (fake of course) but then have the first actor go out of character and freak out because he forgot to take the chain off. That will get somebody going. Make an accident look like a real accident. I admit that I would freak a bit if an actor said, "oh shit! That wasn't suppose to happen!"

..at the end we lock u in a room and discuss how alerting the authorities will cause u to burn in hell.
